Oh how we love us a good picnic! When the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, there’s really no better way to spend an afternoon. Be it a romantic picnic with that special someone or a sunny get together with a few gal pals, a picnic is a wonderful way to escape the busy pace of day to day life and enjoy the simplest of joys like good company, great food, and a little sunshine. We’ve compiled a list of 10 picnic perfect essentials that we hope will inspire you to get out and enjoy summer.
1. The Picnic Basket
The picnic staple. There are so many options when it comes to the picnic basket. There’s your basic wicker option which is always a classic or you can go with a fun colorful version. We loved Oh Joy’s basket for Target. It conveyed a lightheartedness that was so whimsical and of course oh so cute! You also have baskets that come fully loaded. They will include dishes, flatware, and sometimes even a blanket. Choose what works best for you. The fully loaded basket sets might seem tempting, I mean they come with everything you’ll need, but keep in mind the basket will have less room to pack other picnic items like food or beverages.

2. The picnic blanket.
Quilts are lovely for a picnic. Their multi layers make a great comfy spot to lounge on and they are usually really pretty to look at. It should be large enough to comfortably hold all your picnic-goers and food. We love a blanket that is designed to fold small with convenient straps or zippers, total bonus.

Use music to help create the perfect picnic atmosphere. A great playlist can help on a romantic picnic date. Think French love songs playing in the background while you and your sweetie reflect on how life brought the two of you together. Or how about a fun set of feel good tunes to sing along to? Make a playlist to play on an ipod or use your favorite music app like Pandora or Spotify to get those toes tapping.

4. Fresh flowers.
Pick up a pretty bouquet at your local market. It may not seem like a necessity, but it’s part of enjoying the simple things. Plus it’ll help tie in your whole set up and make for a great photo!
5. Sun Dress.
Put on something pretty and you’re sure to feel pretty yourself. We love a good sundress for a picnic. Think colorful and lightweight. Also, keep in mind the longer the length the more comfortable you’ll be while sitting casually on the ground.
You’re gonna be out in the sun so don’t forget your sunnies. And while you’re at it, some sunblock and a sun hat if you prefer.

Casual foods, preferably sandwiches or other things you can eat without utensils. We love a good hummus dip and of course fresh fruits like berries .
Bring something refreshing. Bonus if it’s in pretty packaging! We love Belvoir ElderFlower lemonade. It looks super fancy and is so delicious.
Games add to the whimsy of a picnic. Pack a simple game to bring a long for a little fun. We love connect four, catch phrase for a group and horseshoe.
10. Dishes & utensils.
If your basket didn’t come with a set you have an option to choose disposable or re-usable. I like to use a combination of disposable and reusable containers, utensils, and plates for my picnics. Have fun with the look of your dishes. Patterned, paper, bamboo, tin, or sturdy glass are nice. Cloth napkins add an elegant touch, but paper napkins are easier for clean-up. For flatware, choose light-weight metal or disposable. Think of using mason jars as they come in handy for salads or desserts.
