What is Oil Pulling?
What is oil pulling you might ask…it’s an ancient technique that involves swishing a spoonful of oil in your mouth first thing in the morning for around 20 minutes. This action supposedly draws out toxins in your body, primarily to improve oral health but also to improve your overall health.
Some of the benefits linked to oil pulling include Whiter teeth, Cavity and gingivitis prevention, Better breath, Stronger teeth and gums, improvement with sleep and sinus issues, Alleviation of headaches, and skin issues. With so many health benefits it seems like a no brainer to give this oil pulling technique a try.
Here’s the basic procedure:
First, pick an oil. I use coconut oil as it also has strong antibacterial properties. Then, take a tablespoon of oil and swish it around your mouth for 20 minutes. Coconut oil is a waxy solid so you’ll have to chew it a little as it melts and is able to be pulled back and forth through your teeth.
Be gentle here. No need to be as aggressive as you are with mouthwash, as you will be doing it for 20 minutes and don’t want to get a stiff jaw! The oil will almost double in size as it draws in saliva as well as the toxins. Be sure not to swallow as you will be taking these toxins into your body.
Once the 20 minutes are up, spit the oil out into the trash (not your sink, where the oil may solidify and block up the drain) and swish your mouth with warm salt water. Finally, brush and floss as you normally would.
I’ve found it easiest to do my pulling while in the shower, that way I’m not watching the clock and it actually becomes a relaxing routine. Curious about this technique, give it a try! You don’t have much to lose…Happy pulling!
I used Dr. Bronner’s virgin coconut oil, make sure it’s unrefined. I even got the Fiancé in on this trend. He uses Ziggy Marley’s lemon ginger cold pressed coconut oil. Both available at Whole Foods for about $8.
